The video by TED and the article by Sue Halpern are both concerned about how the internet controls our thoughts based on our previous searches in Google, as well as the links that we open up on a daily basis. Which I believe is true. For example in the Mind Control and the Internet article, “Democracy requires citizens to see things from one another’s point of view, but instead we’re more and more enclosed in our own bubbles,” and it's completely right. People no longer know how to think for themselves or question anything they just accept what's on the internet. There was even an State Farm Insurance commercial that relates to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_CgPsGY5Mw
In the third article by Clive Thompson, he states that internet is just like socializing with people in real life because people either have large groups of friends which are close friends or they have a few close friends and a large group of acquaintances that don't really know much about you besides the basics. That is how he looks at internet because the internet world is complicated. In my perspective all the different ideas have some valid points. The internet knows you based on what you research and the links that you choose to click on. The internet doesn't know any personal information that you do not share about yourself and therefore it cannot truly know you based on your searches. It can suggest things specific to your searches, which is creepy by itself just think of all the interference and monitoring of your online usage, but it doesn't know you up close and personal like your close friends would rather then that large group of acquaintances you have. On the other hand, there are many times that an ad will come up on Google or any search engine that you would not normally have ever gone to but you clicked on it and now it helps shape your views.
The Effects of Social Networking

President or Charlatan
I am horrified at this, not shocked unfortunately, but horrified. First off let me explain the article before my opinion comes into play:
This is horrible. I cannot stand the disgrace Obama has brought to the title "President". It is bad enough that our Commander in Chief may not even be born in this country or doesn't have the decency not to waste literally MILLIONS of taxpayers dollars to go to a club in NYC with Jay-Z or that he has DISGRACED the title President by making a fool of himself being the only active duty president to go on shows like Conan or Jay Leno and many more, multiple times but you have got to be kidding me that he helped his campaign through social networking. I am so angry, and since the internet is filled with stupidity, especially people who had just registered to vote who have no clue what's going on in the world around them except what's on these social networking sites, I can now see how he got into office besides racism.
President Obama had the co-founder of Facebook, Chris Hughes and Jascha Franklin-Hodge to help him create his website. http://www.barackobama.com/splash/choice. The website also known as MyOb had helped President Obama raise money for his campaign. On MyOb you are able to donate money either one time donations or monthly contributions. Yes, he did start taking the public's money early. I wonder how many people wouldn't have done this if they found out his only changes were for the worst and they'd end up spending more money anyway. Obama used this society's obsession with social networking to his advantage. Through which he was able to get his voice out to those who had just registered to vote and really don't have a clue in the world. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. allowed President Obama to post short posts informing his supports of his plans. Those posts kept all of his donors and supporters involved in his campaign and process of the 2008 presidential election. Users of emails and social networks were able to sync their emails and social networking pages to their MyOb pages allowing them to inform their friends that MyOb is a great way to kept informed of President Obama's ideas and campaign. This website also allowed to send text messages to those who have subscribed to it.

Growing Up Online
It's very sad to see this society so warped into technology. It is constantly a discussion in my family. What's worse is how unaware everyone is. I will admit it, I have a Facebook and data phone where the games are severely addicting, a lot of people do, but I still spend time with my family and engage in LIFE.
Social networking in my opinion is not worth the drama or mental shutdown. Most kids, teens, and young adults all revolve around the internet. They have Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, etc. accounts which is harmful because they are posting the most personal things about themselves online. Kids are posting pictures of themselves doing "stupid" things such as consuming alcohol underage, using drugs, and so on. My sister, back when MySpace started becoming popular in about 2005, had our home address listed, her picture, her full name, her work schedule, her work location, dangerous information our father happened to literally stumble upon on Google. Very unsafe, and as you can imagine he was very upset, as he had a right to be!!!! A parents job is to try and keep their children safe until they are old enough to decide how to do so on their own, but how is that possible when in this 'information age' predators can gain information in just a few keystrokes.
Honestly though it's disgusting how 'checked-out' people are from life. Just as I know that people will check their Facebook 50 times a day, I also know that barely anyone is using the online resources to read the news, catch up on current events, or find out what is actually going on in this world. It's very upsetting to me. Regarding the drama, I do partially blame the very biased media who rather report news about these online networks or about Miley Cyrus's 'twerking' drama instead of people getting killed in Syria and almost going to war which happened within the same few days. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
I was a kid of this generation too, sadly. I had a Facebook and MySpace full of drama, I was Cyber-bullied, I had to delete my profile and start over, change my cell phone number, block certain people from my life online and in the real world, and I learned to be more selective in who I chose to share information with. The best thing people could do to avoid problems is to be very careful who can see your information (public/private/etc), what information is posted and who you choose to be your friends that can see this information. If you wouldn't normally tell them something, if you don't talk to them, don't like them or don't even KNOW them then DON'T be friends with them!!!!
